You Never Know What Someone Else Is Going Through

James Ransone, the acclaimed character actor remembered for The WireGeneration KillSinister and It: Chapter Two, died on December 19, 2025, at the age of 46. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner determined that his death was a suicide. His passing stunned colleagues and longtime fans who had followed a career filled with intense, memorable performances.

Behind those performances, Ransone had spoken publicly about difficult periods in his personal life. He previously discussed struggling with heroin addiction when he was younger and later achieving sobriety. In 2021, he also publicly disclosed that he had experienced sexual abuse as a teenager, describing how the trauma had affected his life for years afterward.

Additional details released from the medical examiner’s investigation in 2026 offered a heartbreaking glimpse into his final period. According to accounts of the investigative report, Ransone had a history of suicidal thoughts, and his brother told investigators that the actor had spoken about needing hospital treatment for unspecified mental-health problems before his death. Authorities found no evidence of foul play.

Ransone left behind an unusually varied body of work. For many viewers, he will forever be Chester “Ziggy” Sobotka from the second season of The Wire. Others remember him as Corporal Josh Ray Person in Generation Kill, Deputy So-and-So in Sinister, or the adult Eddie Kaspbrak in It: Chapter Two. His ability to make complicated and sometimes deeply troubled characters feel human became one of the defining qualities of his career.

His death also carries a painful reminder that another person’s private struggles aren’t always visible from the outside. Ransone was a husband and father of two, and his wife, Jamie McPhee, later shared a deeply personal tribute thanking him for their family and writing that they would remain connected forever. His life and work will continue to be remembered by the people who loved him and by audiences who found something unforgettable in his performances.
