These Are the Consequences of Sleeping With the Wrong Person

Sleeping with the wrong person can sometimes bring consequences that aren’t immediately visible. A sexual encounter may last only a short time, but certain sexually transmitted infections can remain in the body much longer, especially when symptoms are ignored or treatment is delayed. Some infections can initially cause mild symptoms—or none at all—making regular testing particularly important.

Sexually transmitted infections can include syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, genital herpes, HPV, hepatitis B, and HIV. Depending on the infection, symptoms may include unusual sores, blisters, discharge, burning during urination, itching, rashes, or pain. However, appearance alone cannot determine which infection someone has, and many conditions unrelated to sexual contact can produce similar symptoms.

When certain infections go untreated, complications can become much more serious. Some bacterial infections can spread beyond the original area, while others may eventually affect reproductive health or other organs. Viral infections may remain in the body long-term and require ongoing management rather than a simple course of antibiotics.

The good news is that many sexually transmitted infections can either be cured or effectively managed when properly diagnosed. Using condoms reduces the risk of many infections, while vaccines can protect against conditions such as HPV and hepatitis B. Testing is especially important after unprotected sex, when beginning a relationship with a new partner, or whenever unexplained symptoms appear.

So the real consequence of sleeping with an infected partner can be contracting an STI, but severe skin changes should never automatically be blamed on sexual activity based only on a photograph. Anyone developing significant sores, swelling, discoloration, fever, rapidly worsening redness, or other severe symptoms should seek medical evaluation promptly so the actual cause can be identified and treated.
