One sunny afternoon, Father Michael was driving along a quiet country road when he noticed a young nun standing beside a bus stop. Recognizing her religious clothing, he pulled over and offered her a ride to the nearby convent. The nun smiled gratefully, introduced herself as Sister Catherine, and climbed into the passenger seat. As they continued their journey, she crossed her legs, causing her gown to shift and reveal part of her leg. Father Michael became so distracted that he nearly drove off the road. After quickly correcting the steering wheel, he glanced toward his passenger, who appeared completely unaware of his embarrassment.

A few minutes later, while changing gears, Father Michael allowed his hand to move toward Sister Catherine’s exposed leg. Before he could continue, she looked at him calmly and asked, “Father, do you remember Psalm 129?” The priest immediately withdrew his hand, straightened his collar, and replied, “Of course, Sister. Forgive me. My thoughts wandered for a moment.” Sister Catherine simply smiled and returned her attention to the beautiful countryside outside the window. Several miles later, the priest once again became distracted. As he reached toward the gear lever, his hand moved toward the nun’s leg a second time. When they finally arrived at the convent, Sister Catherine thanked him warmly for the ride, stepped out of the car, and disappeared through the large wooden entrance.

Father Michael continued toward his parish, feeling increasingly puzzled by the nun’s repeated reference. He considered himself reasonably knowledgeable about Scripture, yet he could not remember the exact wording of Psalm 129. The moment he reached his office, he hurried to the bookshelf, opened his Bible, and searched for the passage. As he began reading, his expression changed from curiosity to complete bewilderment. He had apparently expected to discover a hidden message that would explain the nun’s unusual behavior, but the words before him concerned suffering, perseverance, and the struggles of Israel. Nothing seemed connected to the encounter in his car.

Then Father Michael noticed a handwritten note tucked between the pages of an old joke book beside his Bible. It contained a different version of the same story, except the punchline referred to a completely different biblical passage. He stared at the page for several seconds before bursting into laughter. Someone had mixed up the references, leaving him searching Scripture for a message that had never existed. The following Sunday, he shared a carefully edited version of the experience with a fellow priest, who laughed so hard that he nearly spilled his coffee. Father Michael finally understood the real lesson: never let curiosity become an excuse for inappropriate behavior, and never assume that a mysterious biblical reference means what you hope it means.
