Sleeping on Your Right Side May Affect Digestion

The position you choose when falling asleep may have a greater impact on your digestive health than you realize. While many people prefer sleeping on their right side because it feels comfortable and natural, medical research suggests that this position can worsen nighttime acid reflux in certain individuals. The difference comes down to the anatomy of the stomach and its relationship with the esophagus, the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach. For people who regularly experience heartburn, sour-tasting fluid in the throat, or discomfort after eating, something as simple as changing sleeping positions may help reduce symptoms and improve sleep quality.

Acid reflux occurs when stomach contents flow backward into the esophagus, often because the lower esophageal sphincter, a ring of muscle that normally helps prevent this movement, does not close effectively. When someone lies down, gravity no longer helps keep stomach contents where they belong. Research comparing sleeping positions has found that lying on the right side can increase the time the esophagus remains exposed to stomach acid after reflux occurs. This may lead to a burning sensation in the chest, coughing during the night, throat irritation, or an unpleasant acidic taste upon waking. People with gastroesophageal reflux disease, commonly known as GERD, may be particularly sensitive to these effects.

Sleeping on the left side, by contrast, can make it more difficult for stomach contents to travel upward into the esophagus. Because of the stomach’s natural shape and position, left-side sleeping generally places the junction between the stomach and esophagus in a more favorable relationship to the pool of stomach contents. Clinical studies have associated this position with shorter periods of acid exposure and faster clearance of refluxed acid. This does not mean that left-side sleeping completely prevents reflux or guarantees better digestion for everyone. However, for individuals who struggle with nighttime heartburn, it is a simple, low-cost adjustment that may provide meaningful relief without requiring major lifestyle changes.

Sleeping position is only one factor affecting nighttime reflux. Eating large meals shortly before bedtime, consuming alcohol, smoking, and lying flat immediately after eating can also contribute to symptoms. Healthcare professionals commonly recommend finishing meals at least two to three hours before going to bed, avoiding foods that consistently trigger symptoms, and elevating the head of the bed for people with frequent nighttime reflux. Using a wedge pillow or raising the head of the bed can help reduce the backward movement of stomach contents, whereas simply stacking ordinary pillows may not provide the same benefit. Maintaining a healthy weight when appropriate and discussing persistent symptoms with a medical professional can also play an important role in managing reflux.

It is important to understand that sleeping on the right side is not inherently dangerous and does not automatically cause digestive disease. Many people sleep comfortably in this position without experiencing heartburn or other symptoms. The recommendation to favor the left side is most relevant to people who already have acid reflux, particularly when symptoms occur at night. Persistent heartburn, difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss, or recurrent vomiting should be evaluated by a healthcare professional rather than managed through sleeping position alone. Anyone experiencing severe or unexplained chest pain should seek urgent medical assessment. Ultimately, listening to your body and making small adjustments to your bedtime routine may help you enjoy more comfortable nights, and for those affected by acid reflux, turning onto the left side could be a surprisingly useful place to start.
